Leave white balance on AUTO. The X-M5’s auto is reliable, and if you shoot FINE+RAW you can change it later at no cost at all. Reach for a fixed value only when consistency across a set matters, or when AUTO is throwing away warmth you actually wanted.

What white balance is compensating for
Light has colour. Household bulbs are orange, open shade is blue, overcast light is slightly cool, a sunset is deeply warm. Your eyes adapt so automatically that you barely notice; the sensor does not. White balance tells the camera what colour the light is so that white things come out white — and, more importantly, so skin looks like skin.
The options that matter
| Option | What it does | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| AUTO | Standard automatic | Default. Almost always right. |
| AUTO WHITE PRIORITY | Pushes toward cleaner whites under warm light | Documents, product shots, an orange-lit room where you want neutrality |
| AUTO AMBIENCE PRIORITY | Preserves the warm mood of the room | Candlelight, golden hour, cosy interiors |
| COLOR TEMPERATURE | A fixed Kelvin value, 2500 to 10000 K | Mixed lighting where AUTO drifts between frames. Around 3200 K under tungsten. |
| CUSTOM 1-3 | Measured from a white or grey card | Copy work, product photography, anything that must match exactly |
| DAYLIGHT / SHADE / INCANDESCENT / FLUORESCENT 1-3 | Fixed presets for named light sources | Consistency across a set, or deliberately “wrong” for mood — SHADE warms a sunset beautifully |
Three official details
- There is no separate “WB SHIFT” menu item. Fine-tuning lives inside WHITE BALANCE: select an option, press MENU/OK, and a fine-tuning grid appears. The manual notes you cannot tilt the focus stick diagonally there — move one axis at a time.
- Measuring a custom white balance: choose CUSTOM 1, 2 or 3, fill the target with a white or grey reference, and press the shutter fully. The screen reports COMPLETED, UNDER or OVER; on UNDER or OVER, adjust exposure compensation and retry.
- Flash caveat: white balance is adjusted for flash only in AUTO, WHITE PRIORITY, AMBIENCE PRIORITY and UNDERWATER. With any other option selected, Fujifilm’s instruction is to turn the flash off.
Field decisions
| Scene | Setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoors, any weather | AUTO | Reliable, and RAW protects you |
| Golden hour, candles, a warm bar | AUTO AMBIENCE PRIORITY, or DAYLIGHT | Keeps the warmth that made you raise the camera |
| Restaurant with mixed bulbs | COLOR TEMPERATURE, locked | Consistency beats accuracy across a series |
| Sunset you want warmer | SHADE | Deliberately “wrong” for effect |
| Product on a white background | CUSTOM, measured | Exactness matters here and nowhere else |
Common mistakes
- Leaving a CUSTOM or Kelvin value set from yesterday and shooting a whole afternoon in the wrong colour.
- Hunting the menu for a “WB SHIFT” item that does not exist on this body.
- Using AUTO WHITE PRIORITY at golden hour, then wondering where the golden went.
Assignment: the same room, four ways
Indoors in the evening with the lamps on, photograph the same corner at AUTO, AUTO WHITE PRIORITY, AUTO AMBIENCE PRIORITY and INCANDESCENT. Look at them side by side and pick the one that matches your memory of the room. That preference is yours to keep — and it tells you which auto mode you should be defaulting to indoors.
