Charge with the camera switched off โ the battery will not charge while the camera is on. Plan for roughly 300 to 450 photographs per battery in ordinary use, carry one spare, and store batteries at about half charge if the camera is going in a drawer for a month.

Two ways to charge, and when each wins
| Method | What happens | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| In-camera USB-C | Camera off: the battery charges and the indicator lamp is on. Lamp off means finished; blinking means a charging error. | Travelling light, charging overnight, topping up from a laptop. |
| External charger | Roughly 150 minutes for a full battery, and the camera stays free to shoot. | You own a spare. This is the setup you want at home. |
Official
“The battery will not charge while the camera is on.” If the camera is turned on during charging, charging ends and the USB connection powers the camera instead โ the battery level then declines gradually. So you can run the camera from USB-C, but do not assume the level will hold steady while recording.
How many photographs per charge, realistically
Fujifilm’s CIPA figure is measured under a standard test that power-cycles the camera constantly, so it is useful for comparing bodies and useless for planning a day out. In practice, screen-only shooting with moderate reviewing lands around 300 to 450 frames. Sustained bursts do better than the rating, because the camera never sleeps between shots. Video does far worse.
Uncertain
No controlled real-world battery test specific to the X-M5 was found from a major review outlet. The 300 to 450 range is extrapolated from other NP-W126S bodies. Treat it as a planning estimate, not a specification.
Battery care that actually matters
- Cold reduces capacity temporarily, not permanently. Keep a spare in an inside pocket against your body and rotate. The cold one usually recovers once warm.
- Store at roughly 40 to 60 percent for long periods. Full storage ages a cell faster; empty storage can drop it below safe voltage permanently.
- Charge one or two days before a trip, not a month before. Lithium cells self-discharge on the shelf.
- Flying: the NP-W126S is about 8.7 Wh, far below the 100 Wh airline threshold, so no approval is needed. Carry spares in the cabin with terminals covered.
Common mistake
Leaving the camera switched on while it is plugged in and assuming it is charging. It is not โ it is being powered, and slowly draining. Switch the camera off to charge.
