Point the camera down, align the white dot on the lens with the white dot on the mount, and turn until it clicks. To remove it, hold the lens release button on the front right of the mount and twist back. Then set the clock properly — a year of files stamped 1 January is a real and very annoying mistake.
XC15-45mm 135 g 52 mm filter no weather sealing
Mounting the lens without regret
- Switch the camera off.
- Face the mount downwards while both caps are off. Dust falls out instead of in — this one habit prevents most sensor-dust complaints.
- Align the index marks on lens and body, then rotate the lens clockwise (as you look at the front of the camera) until it clicks. Do not press the release button while mounting.
- To remove: hold the lens release button — the small circle to the right of the mount as you face the camera — and twist the lens back the other way.
The XC15-45mm is a retracting power-zoom lens. Out of the box it is collapsed and the camera will prompt you to extend it: twist the zoom ring from the locked position and the lens comes to life. Curiously, it is longer at 15 mm (65.2 mm) than at 45 mm (62.1 mm) — it extends most at the wide end, which surprises everyone.
Firmware, before anything else
Fujifilm shipped two emergency lens-firmware updates in November 2024 aimed specifically at this lens paired with the X-M5 and X-T50. Ver. 1.11 fixed the lens “automatically sinking and ejecting unintentionally”; Ver. 1.12 fixed a remaining retraction issue in rare conditions. Check that your lens is on 1.12 or later. If the lens retracts and re-extends by itself, that is this bug, not a fault.
First power-on: five screens that matter
| Setting | Where | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Language | SET-UP > USER SETTING > language | Set it first, so every later screen is readable. |
| Date and time | SET-UP > USER SETTING > DATE/TIME | Set it accurately. Every file is stamped with this, and sorting a trip by time depends on it. |
| Area setting | SET-UP > USER SETTING > AREA SETTING | Pick your city. TIME DIFFERENCE handles travel later without disturbing home time. |
| Format the card | SET-UP > USER SETTING > FORMAT | Do it now, with the card you intend to use. |
| Firmware version | SET-UP > USER SETTING > FIRMWARE UPDATE | Note both body and lens versions, then compare with Fujifilm’s download page. |
Common mistake
Dismissing the “set the clock” prompt at first power-up. It does not ask twice, and you end up with a year of photographs stamped 2024-01-01 that no software can truthfully re-sort.
Care notes for this lens specifically
- No weather sealing. Fujifilm publishes no weather-resistance rating and the name carries no “WR”. Keep it out of rain; a plastic bag and a rubber band is a legitimate field solution.
- No hood is included. A cheap 52 mm screw-in hood is useful mostly as physical protection for the front element.
- The mount is plastic. It is fine in normal use, but do not hang a heavy accessory off the lens or use it as a handle.
